Duties of the Planning Commission
Every Virginia locality must have a planning commission. The governing body may provide facilities for meetings of the planning commission and for preservation of its records, and may appropriate funds to defray its expenses. The governing body also may provide for reimbursement of the actual expenses of members of the planning commission and may compensate any or all of the commissioners for their service.
The local planning commission is required by law to serve as an advisory commission to the governing body; to conduct studies of existing local conditions and future trends; and to prepare and recommend to the governing body a comprehensive plan for the general physical development of th locality and an ordinance to regulate the subdivision of land within its boundaries. The commission also must make recommendations to the planning district commission concerning the effect on the locality of any proposed regional comprehensive plan. Either at the request of the board of supervisors or on its own initiative, the local planning commission is responsible for preparing and recommending an official map, a capital outlay program, and a zoning ordinance.
If you have plans to subdivide a parcel of property, this plan must be presented to the planning commission for approval. |
